Family-Friendly Japan Trip: Deer Parks, 99 Islands, Traditional Onsens & Nagasaki History
Japan has a special way of blending calm nature, deep culture, and beautiful family moments—all in one trip.
On our recent adventure, we spent four days exploring Nara, Sasebo, and Nagasaki, and it turned out to be one of our favorite family getaways so far.
From feeding the friendly deer in Nara and staying at the JW Marriott, to cruising through Sasebo’s 99 Islands, enjoying a traditional onsen,
and learning important history in Nagasaki, this route is perfect for families traveling with kids.
DAY 1 – NARA: DEER PARK, TODAIJI TEMPLE & JW MARRIOTT STAY
We started our journey in Nara, a peaceful destination that offers nature, temples, and plenty of space for kids to explore.
We stayed at the JW Marriott Nara, a beautiful and family-friendly hotel with spacious rooms and warm service.
Nara Deer Park was a highlight for us—feeding the bowing deer felt magical, especially for my son.
The park is huge and perfect for morning walks away from the crowds.
We also visited the Todaiji Temple, home to the Great Buddha, and took time to explore the surrounding gardens.
Other family-friendly activities in Nara include:
- A peaceful walk through Isuien Garden
- Café hopping in Naramachi Old Town
- Hiking Mount Wakakusa
- Visiting the Nara National Museum

DAY 2 – SASEBO, KYUSHU: 99 ISLANDS, NAVAL VIEWS & TRADITIONAL ONSEN
Next, we traveled to Sasebo in Kyushu—a beautiful coastal city surrounded by nature.
We stayed at Yumihari-no-Oka Hotel, which offers incredible panoramic views of the 99 Islands and the historic Sasebo Naval Base.
We took the Kujukushima (99 Islands) sightseeing cruise, which was peaceful and great for families.
The traditional onsen experience later in the day was one of the most relaxing moments of the trip.
Many onsens in Sasebo offer private family rooms, which is perfect when traveling with kids.

Other family-friendly activities in Sasebo include:
- Huis Ten Bosch Theme Park
- Kujukushima Zoo & Botanical Garden
- Tenkaiho Observatory
- Trying the famous Sasebo Burgers
DAY 3 – NAGASAKI: PEACE PARK, HISTORY & MOUNT INASA NIGHT VIEW
On day three, we explored Nagasaki, a city filled with rich history and beautiful viewpoints.
The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum was emotional, meaningful, and educational.
With kids, I always pair visits like this with something relaxing afterward.

Right next to the museum is Nagasaki Peace Park, a calm and open space filled with peace statues and fountains.
Later, we took the ropeway up Mount Inasa for one of the most beautiful night views in Japan.
Other things to do in Nagasaki:
- Glover Garden
- Oura Church
- Dejima Museum
- Nagasaki Penguin Aquarium
DAY 4 – SLOW COASTAL MOMENTS & FAMILY TIME
On our last day, we focused on slow, simple family moments.
Japan’s coastal towns are peaceful, scenic, and perfect for a relaxing morning.
You can enjoy:
- A ferry ride
- Another onsen visit
- Local markets
- Coastal walks
- A calm lunch before heading home
Final Thoughts
This 4-day route—Nara → Sasebo → Nagasaki—combined everything I love about Japan:
nature, history, family-friendly activities, and peaceful moments.
Every stop offered something unique, and every day created memories we’ll keep forever.
