Exploring Kyoto with Family – Temples, Bamboo Forests & Hidden Streets
Kyoto has always been one of those magical cities that feels like stepping back in time. With its peaceful gardens, ancient temples, and charming streets lined with wooden houses, it’s a perfect destination for families who love culture, nature, and slow travel. During our trip, we wanted to experience the heart of traditional Japan — and Kyoto did not disappoint!
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest – A Peaceful Morning Walk
One of the highlights of our visit was the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. We went early in the morning before the crowds arrived, and it was pure magic. The tall bamboo stalks swayed gently in the wind, and the sound of rustling leaves created such a calming atmosphere — even our little one loved it!
👶 Family Tip: The path through the bamboo forest is stroller-friendly, though it’s a bit long, so make sure to bring snacks and water for the kids. Try to go before 8 AM if possible, as it gets busy quickly, especially on weekends.

Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine – The Iconic Red Gates
Next, we visited the famous Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine, known for its thousands of bright red torii gates that wind up the mountain. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Kyoto — and for good reason! The walk through the gates feels almost like a storybook adventure.
👶 Family Tip: There are lots of steps here, so it’s not very stroller-friendly. If you’re traveling with small children, consider bringing a baby carrier instead. You can walk partway up and still enjoy plenty of beautiful photo spots without going all the way to the top.

castles & Historical Districts

Nijō Castle
No visit to Kyoto is complete without exploring its castles and historical neighborhoods. Nijō Castle, with its stunning gardens and ‘nightingale floors’ that chirp as you walk, was one of our favorites. Kids find it fascinating when they realize the floors were designed to sing for security! We also loved strolling through the Gion District, where you might spot a real geisha or enjoy traditional sweets in cozy tea houses.

Nature & Markets
Kyoto is surrounded by nature, offering plenty of relaxing walks even in the heart of the city. The Philosopher’s Path is a peaceful trail lined with cherry trees and small temples — ideal for a slow family stroll. We loved visiting Nishiki Market, also known as ‘Kyoto’s Kitchen’, full of delicious food stalls and colorful shops.
👨👩👦 Family Tip: Most markets are stroller-accessible, but go early or on weekdays to avoid crowds. Try local favorites like fresh mochi and yakitori skewers — they’re great for little hands!
Final Thoughts – Kyoto with Kids
Kyoto is a place where tradition meets tranquility, and even with a toddler, we found it to be an unforgettable destination. From the peaceful bamboo forest walks to the spiritual shrine visits, every moment was filled with wonder.
The best advice? Start early, take your time, and enjoy Kyoto’s slower rhythm. Families will love the mix of nature, history, and culture, making Kyoto one of Japan’s most beautiful and enriching cities to visit with children.
