Flying a Drone in Phuket, Thailand: Everything You Need to Know
Flying a drone in Phuket feels like a dream — turquoise waters, limestone cliffs, hidden beaches, and golden sunsets that look unreal from above. But Thailand has strict drone regulations, and understanding them is essential if you want to fly legally and stress-free.
WHY PHUKET IS SPECIAL FOR DRONE FLYING
Phuket offers some of the most cinematic aerial views in Southeast Asia: island chains, dramatic coastlines, longtail boats, and lush jungle hills meeting the sea. For drone lovers, it’s pure magic — if done responsibly.

WHO THIS GUIDE IS FOR
This guide is ideal for adventurous travelers, couples, photographers, and content creators a who travel with a drone and want to fly legally while capturing meaningful visuals.
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Before arriving, the registration process felt overwhelming. CAAT, NBTC, insurance, apps — it was a lot. I decided to use Drone Thailand (MyDroneThailand.com), and it made the entire process smooth and stress-free. Communication was easy, everything was explained clearly, and they handled the complicated parts.
APPLY AFTER ARRIVAL: IMPORTANT TIP
I strongly recommend applying immediately after arrival in Thailand. While there are options without a Thai SIM card, I personally found the SIM card option much clearer and faster.

WHERE TO GET A THAI SIM CARD AT PHUKET AIRPORT
After landing, don’t buy a SIM from the first stand you see. Go to the 2nd floor near the elevators — the stand there was cheaper, very helpful, and activated my SIM immediately. I received my Thai number and data on the spot.
HOW THE REGISTRATION PROCESS WORKS
I provided photos of my passport, drone, serial numbers, and entry stamp. Drone Thailand sent all documents digitally — I signed everything on my phone and sent it back. My CAAT and NBTC registrations were approved in under 24 hours.

REGISTRATION VS FLIGHT PERMITS
Step 1: Register your drone (CAAT & NBTC).
Step 2: Apply for flight permits for specific locations.
Drone Thailand can also apply for these permits on your behalf, especially for national parks.

LOCATIONS I APPLIED TO FLY
• Phi Phi Islands – approved first
• James Bond Island (Phang Nga Bay) – approved next
• Similan Islands – took about 4 days
Most permits take 24–48 hours, but national parks may take longer. Apply early and preferably on a Monday, as offices are closed on weekends.
PRICING
Service (CAAT + NBTC): 2,100 THB
Insurance (DJI Air 3S): 799 THB
Total: 2,899 THB
FINAL THOUGHTS
Flying a drone in Phuket is absolutely worth it when done legally. Registering properly gave me peace of mind and allowed me to focus on creating meaningful aerial memories.
